Jet Ski Tour vs. Pontoon Rental: How to Choose the Right One for Your Group

Trying to pick between a guided jet ski tour and a self-driven pontoon cruise on Assateague Bay? Here's how a local family-owned operator helps groups choose — by group size, age range, vibe, and budget.

Jet Ski Tour vs. Pontoon Rental: How to Choose the Right One for Your Group

If you've ever stood on the dock at 307 Dorchester Street trying to decide between a jet ski tour and a pontoon rental, you're in good company. It's the question we hear more than any other — and the honest answer is that both are great, but they're built for very different days.

This is a guide from people who run the bay every day. We'll walk through how to pick between the two based on your group size, age range, what you actually want out of the day, and what fits your budget.

The 30-Second Version

Here's the cheat sheet if you're in a hurry:

  • Pick a jet ski tour if your group is 1–6 people, you want adrenaline, and you're okay with the ride being shorter and more structured.
  • Pick a pontoon rental if your group is 4–10 people, you want to relax, swim, eat, and hang out for several hours, and you have at least one adult 21+ to drive.
  • Still can't decide? A 4-hour pontoon almost always wins for mixed groups. There's room for the swimmers, the suntan crowd, the toddler, and the cooler all at once.

How Long is Each Experience?

This is usually the first thing that swings the decision.

A jet ski tour is built to deliver a memorable hour. You arrive, get your safety briefing, hit the water with a Maryland-certified guide, and you're back on dry land roughly 90 minutes later. It's a do this AND something else kind of activity.

A pontoon is the opposite — it's the entire afternoon. You're not running a clock against a guide, you're captaining the boat across Assateague Bay on your own time.

Group Size: The Most Honest Answer

Group size matters more than people realize:

  • 1–3 people → A single jet ski works, or a 2-hour pontoon if you'd rather chill.
  • 4–6 people → Two jet skis (great group photo op) or a pontoon (more flexible).
  • 7–10 people → Pontoon, no question. One boat fits up to 10 guests.
  • More than 10 → Multiple jet skis or a small pontoon fleet. Call us, we'll coordinate.

Renting four jet skis for a group of eight gets pricey fast. A pontoon often comes out cheaper per person and keeps everyone together.

Age Range and Driving Requirements

This is the part where rules quietly decide for you:

  • Jet ski drivers must be 16+ with a valid photo ID.
  • Jet ski passengers must be 5+ (riding with an adult).
  • Pontoon drivers must be 21+ with a valid driver's license.
  • Pontoon passengers can be any age, including infants.

If your group is mostly under 16, a jet ski tour means everyone rides as a passenger with adults. If you've got a baby, a grandparent, or anyone who isn't excited about getting splashed for an hour, the pontoon is the right call.

What's the Vibe?

A jet ski tour is adrenaline-first. Once you clear the no-wake zone, you're running open bay water at full throttle, weaving through scenery, with a guide leading the route past wild horse coastline and dolphin territory.

A pontoon rental is vibe-first. Bring a cooler, food, drinks, music, and a bathing suit. Anchor at a sandbar and swim. Idle along the shoreline of Assateague Island and watch the wild horses graze just feet from the water. Drop a fishing line. Catch the sunset on the way home.

Both have wild horses. Both have dolphins. The difference is how you experience them — sprinting past or floating alongside.

Budget Math

We always tell people: don't compare a 1-hour jet ski tour to a full-day pontoon and call them apples to apples. They're not.

Per-hour, jet skis are higher because of the guide, the fuel, and the equipment. Per-person on a 10-guest pontoon, you're often paying less than dinner out — for an entire afternoon on the water.

A useful way to think about it:

If your group of 8 wants an hour of action, four jet skis (two riders each) is the move. If your group of 8 wants a half-day on the bay, a pontoon will be cheaper and better.

When to Pick Both

If you're in town for more than a day, do both. They're complementary, not competing. A lot of our regulars come down for a weekend and book:

  • A morning pontoon to swim, anchor, and explore at their own pace
  • An evening jet ski tour the next day for the speed run and sunset

You leave with two completely different memories of the same bay.

The Family Trip Test

Quick gut check we use with families on the phone:

  • "Is anyone in your group nervous about being on a fast watercraft?" → Pontoon.
  • "Is anyone under 5 or over 70 with mobility issues?" → Pontoon.
  • "Do you want to bring a cooler, food, or alcohol?" → Pontoon (BYOB-friendly, jet skis are not).
  • "Does your group want adrenaline more than relaxation?" → Jet ski.
  • "Do you want a structured 'experience' rather than planning your own day?" → Jet ski.

What Both Include

Whichever way you go, every rental at OC Downtown Adventures comes with:

  • Brand-new equipment, inspected daily
  • Free parking right at the dock at 307 Dorchester Street
  • Life vests in every size, included at no extra cost
  • A full safety and operations briefing before you leave the dock
  • Maryland-certified guide (jet ski tours)
  • Full pontoon orientation before departure (pontoon rentals)

No upsells. No hidden fees. No old equipment dressed up as new.

Still Not Sure?

Call the dock and tell us about your group. We'll give you the honest answer — even if that means recommending the cheaper option. We've been doing this long enough to know that a good day on the water is a return customer, and a return customer is worth more than a $50 upsell.

Ready to book? Both options are right here on the site. And if you're going for a full day, the 4-hour pontoon is our most popular rental — there's a reason.
